Serial Port Redirector

Serial Port Redirector (aka Serial to Ethernet Connector) enables remote connections to multiple serial port devices from your computer. With COM Port Redirector, you don’t need a serial device directly attached to your machine. Instead, you can access a virtual COM port over Ethernet, allowing you to connect to shared serial devices from anywhere in the world. The software creates virtual serial ports over Ethernet, giving you the full functionality of a local COM port while working remotely.

COM Port Redirection Software Benefits

COM Port Redirector by Electronic Team enables multiple computers to connect to the same COM port over a network. This software increases the value of your serial-attached devices by making them available to any network-connected computer.

There are no distance limitations and the virtual COM ports created by the app provide the same functionality as a direct connection to the peripheral equipment. COM port Redirector supports Linux and Windows operating systems

  • Redirect serial ports over TCP/IP network (Server)

A server listens for incoming connections from clients and redirects local COM ports – either real or virtual – over Ethernet. Any application that can initialize outgoing connection to a TCP/IP server can be a client. A single COM port can be redirected to multiple clients at the same time, and each of them can transmit data to their local serial port, while Serial Port Redirector will gather all the data on the server.
  • Connect to serial ports remotely (Client)

Once a client connection is created, data transmitted by a local serial port is redirected to the remote server over TCP/IP protocol. You need to specify the IP address (or the network name) of a remote server and TCP port to connect to, it is not required to install COM Port Redirector on the remote server. Once your machine and a remote server are connected, your local serial port will receive all the data sent from the remote end.
  • Utilize UDP for data transfer

Serial port data can be redirected over UDP/IP transport protocol and broadcast over a local network. COM Port Redirector installation is not required at the remote end. You can choose either RAW data transmission algorithm or Telnet (RFC 2217) as a protocol for transmitting the data.
  • Serial Port Redirector for Linux OS

COM Port Redirector is a cross-platform solution, it now has a command-line version for Linux OS. You can designate a Linux machine as a server and Windows machine as a client, or the other way around. Serial Port Redirector for Linux supports data transmission over UDP.

Key Features of Serial Port Redirector

Our software elevates COM port sharing, providing robust options for reliable data transmission and remote COM port management.

Send and Receive RAW Data

Choose the RAW data transmission protocol for your connection to transmit data exactly as it is sent, without protocol-specific formatting. This ensures a true raw serial over TCP session for precise data handling.

Remote COM Port Parameter Adjustment

Using the Telnet protocol (RFC 2217), both server and client can synchronize COM port configurations. This feature allows remote notification of any updates to COM port settings or line status changes, enabling real-time control from either end.

Operates as a Windows Service

COM Port Redirector runs as a Windows service, automatically re-establishing connections on system boot before user login. After setup, you can safely close the interface while maintaining all serial-over-LAN connections.

Intelligent Data Transmission Options

Fine-tune how data is sent over the serial-to-network connection. Set pauses between network packets, or use a buffer to accumulate data until it reaches a certain size or time threshold before sending. These options allow for smoother and more controlled data flow.

How to Redirect COM Port over Ethernet?

1
Download and install Serial to Ethernet Connector on the server computer, which is the machine containing the physical or virtual COM port that will be shared.
2
Launch the application, select New connection -> Server connection, then name the connection. Specify the serial interface and the TCP port for monitoring. Click Create connection to set it up.
3
Next, install the software on the client computer. Choose New connection -> Client connection, and enter the server's IP address along with the TCP port specified when the server connection was created. To create virtual serial ports on the client, select the Create as virtual port option.
4
Click Create client connection.

Now, the client machine can access all data from the server’s physical serial port. Data flows seamlessly in both directions between the server's real COM port and the client’s virtual COM port.

Our Customers real-life experience

Throughout its long history, our software has helped a lot of people to solve a variety of tasks and problems of absolutely different kinds. And here are some of them:
We have a limited quantity of instruments in our quality control laboratory. The instruments are connected to computers via serial ports. To avoid constant relocation and re-calibration of the appliances we decided to resort to Serial to Ethernet Connector, and now have a terminal server that every employee has an access to and use every instrument at any given time.
Ellen Bishop, Pollution Control Engineer
Our engineers have integrated Serial to Ethernet functionality into our industrial automation system of the oil rig machines’ diagnostic software, so service personnel can detect any issues that affect the system’s state. In this way, diagnostic and predictive measures can be performed and provided to field personnel so that they can concentrate their efforts on the drilling operation instead of maintenance procedures.
William Newman, Efficiency Engineer
In a nutshell, I was looking for a way to map a COM port with a TAPI device attached to it to a client Citrix XenDesktop session. Since TAPI devices could not be mapped to client COM ports in XenDesktop, my attention was drawn by Serial to Ethernet Connector. The app made possible a serial tunnelling by extending a serial link across Ethernet to a virtual environment.
Ted Robertson, Communications Engineer
High safety standards are a must in our company, so we demand the same from the software that is used in our work. We have chosen Serial to Ethernet Connector for the password authentication and traffic encryption, which is significant when working with the point of sale terminals. These are the features that distinguish it from any other software-based serial device server on the market.
